Nanoparticles are an important component of certain products, such as medicines and personal care products. These small particles improve the structure and functioning of these kinds of products. To apply them in the right way, it is important to have knowledge about the properties of nanoparticles. For example, they differ in size and shape. Solids Solutions has various techniques and instruments to map out these properties. In our laboratory in Delft, we conduct research on particles and powders so they can be applied in the industry. Performing BET surface analysis By means of a BET analysis, the pore size and porosity of a solid substance can be determined. We do this by means of physical gas adsorption, in which gas is adsorbed on the surface of a substance. Nitrogen is usually the most suitable gas for this purpose, but other gases are sometimes used as well. With a BET surface analysis of nanoparticles, the specific surface area of the particles is calculated. We have two different techniques for obtaining the desired information from this analysis. The flow method provides information on the BET surface and/or a total pore volume and the volumetric technique results in a complete isotherm with information on the BET surface, the pore volume and the pore size distribution. The sedimentation method With sedimentation, particles are added to a liquid, so that the sedimentation speed can be determined. This speed says something about the size of the particles. We therefore use differential centrifugal sedimentation nanoparticles to calculate the size of nanoparticles. We use X-rays for this, so that the sedimentation rate can be determined in time intervals. This way, work can be done faster. Do you need the help of Solids Solutions in developing your product?
